The state of the Yarnsiders.
A special report on how, what, and where we all make...
INSIDE: What you all say about your making, and what that says about us as a community, plus some things you may be surprised at!
As you may have noticed, I run a poll every week, and many of you cast your votes. It’s always fascinating to look at when you’ve all chosen.
So, there’s many tidbits waiting to be discovered… Let's see what we find!
About our community.
Do you knit on…
The result: Knitting on planes is popular (50%) which is an excellent use of the time, with road trips in the car at 39% (I hope you’re not the one driving! 😉)
And some of you do so while on the train (11%).
It seems I’m the only one who knits on bus and tram trips! Anyone else?
Who inspired you to learn your fiber art of choice?
The result: It’s wonderful to see you were inspired by a family member! (69%) Maybe you too had a beloved grandmother?
Some of you were also moved to learn by a friend (19%), and a few of you from a significant other, an instructor, or an online creator (all 4%).
What skill level do you identify as?
The result: Most of you are intermediate makers (54%), with advanced beginners not far behind (30%), and the experts and beginners make up the rest (8%.)
Do you multitask when you craft?
The result: Most watch something (47%), others listen to an audiobook (31%), or podcast (13%), like me. A few of you talk with others (2%), and some dedicated souls just focus on their craft (7%.)
What we like making.
Do you prefer one or multiple projects at a time?
The result: A close call! ‘Just one’ wins by a whisker at 52% of votes!
And, related to the above…
What do you love about knitting multiple projects?
The result: Most of you chose all of the above (54%), with the options being:
Choice of large or small projects (15%)
Variety of patterns (23%)
Working with different yarns (8%)
Working with different needles
Do you like making socks?
The result: I’m glad to see most of you love doing it, like me! (68%.) Some of you have tried it, good on you, (13%), and others haven’t learned how to yet. (16%.)
What are you waiting for?
And 3% of you don’t enjoy it. I suppose it can’t suit everyone!
What are your go-to fall projects?
The result: Shawls are the most popular at 41% (great choice! 😊), with blankets (23%), sweaters (18%), and socks at 9%. All getting ready for winter, no doubt!
For the 9% of you who chose ‘something else’, what do you like making in Fall?
We can’t do it without yarn!
Do you use a yarn swift?
An umbrella swift is the most popular (I love mine!) at 48%, with tabletop swift users at 31%. Some of you use the chair back (7%), and your knees (3%).
Several of you said you’d like to use one (10%), and I hope you get the chance! It’s such a lovely tool to have.
Which end of the yarn do you start with?
The result: While I would’ve been glad most of you make the recommended choice (from the center of the ball: 48%)…
After far too many recent frustrating tangles, I have my doubts!
The rest of you use the outside of the ball (30%), and some don’t mind (22%).
Do you like using multiple yarns held together?
The result: It’s almost a unanimous yes! (48%.) Which caught me by surprise, as I rarely do it. I didn’t think it’d be that popular.
The rest of you didn’t enjoy it (32%), and 20% had never tried it before.

That sure is a lot of interesting info Jodie! 😻 I think I fall under most majorities. 😄😅
FYI: I too crochet on the bus every day I take one, which is 2 times/day, 4-5days/week, while I listen to podcasts. Love this time to crochet, and almost wish there's more traffic than usual just so I can crochet more. 😇😄
