In my ideal world, I would have just two: one for at home and one for on-the-go. However, I often find myself getting really excited to cast on a new project before my previous one is finished. Or I find that I'm in need of a particular wardrobe item by a deadline (usually thanks to the weather) and I need to add another WIP to my list.

I'm on team "several wips at the same time too". One of the crafting moments I have more difficulties with is when deciding what to crochet next. It's comforting to know I can always grab something to help me settle and think better. What often happens is some wips (if not all) are experiments, exercises to try an idea out, or only swatches to learn and practice something new. It's also nice to have at least two wips: one more simple and portable; another more complicated (which I make portable for as long as I can).

(On the trivia, I'd say it was... the loom?)

I agree that having something you can do to help ease your mind and provide calm is so helpful.

I wondered what your process is to decide on what to crochet next? I'd love to hear about that.

It's fun to experiment and learn something new, then have opportunities to practice too. Great thinking re having a simple and portable option and a more complicated one that can be still taken out and about until it can't :)

I'll let you know next week whether you've got the answer to the trivia question :) Thanks so much for having a go.

Great question… :D Got me thinking, ‘cause I always feel like I don’t have proper processes. The moment between finishing something and starting something new is the one that makes feel overwhelmed the most, I think.

I try to sketch ideas out on a notebook (or more than one) as much as I can, and this always helps me to decide. It usually is something I’ve been thinking about for a while, like a itch I gotta scratch, and the problem is always deciding. :D

I have those itches, but I also have some “to-do’s”, projects that have a goal, like preparing a workshop, so I jump from something I just want to try (like learning squares center-out, which then sparks more ideas…), and something I have to get moving on. They kind of feed eachother, because doing one project helps me think through another. Panic also helps me push through, in the case of the “to-do"‘s”. :D

Thank you for the challenging question, Jodie! :)

Thank you so much Ana for sharing your process. It's very interesting to learn what designers like yourself think about. I find it fascinating and I'm sure others do too. :)

Loved this post, Jodie! I haven't started on Cal Newport's new book yet. I have multiple WIPs usually for design, personal, a sock, some swatching. :)

I'd love to hear about your thoughts on the book when you read it. The life of a designer equals multiple projects to be sure :)

I have one project for while in my car, waiting for the kids after school. I have at least 1 type of wearable or blanket. My last will be quick ones like dish cloth or cup cozy. It is tailored to location and patience.
